How has the internet changed the way you learn?

When I was in school, we have been using books only, even for the test’s answers, we were been buying different books. I believe, we started using the Internet only in high school. Nowadays, it’s so easy to find anything you want. You can buy, rent, and read the online books, search for any library books online, find the answers to your tests, description of the mathematical equation, and even the videos, blogs, websites, and social networks with all the information you might need for your studies.

When I was in high school, I had a tutor who helped me to get ready for my final exams. I was taking the Russian language, and I had to buy a huge printed book with all the grammar rules, texts, compositions and exercises to do by yourself. I was using that book only and didn’t have to use the Internet even ones. The exercises had the answers at the end of the book, so you’re able to check them after you’re done.

I remember when I started to use Intenet for learning. It was 6 years ago when I started to learn English. I was back to Belarus and had been communicating with the guy from Argentina in English, he was also learning. I remember using Facebook groups for that as well. It was fun! 🙂

How has the internet changed the way you handle money?

I was born in Belarus, a small country, located between Russia, Poland, and Ukraine. We have everything different there, comparing to the United States, as well as the payment methods, and the way people handle money. We could not believe 20 years ago that we will be using the Internet for that. There’s no PayPal and checks payment in Belarus. People get the salary directly to their bank account or cash. My grandparents don’t even have cards nowadays, they use cash everywhere.

Talking about the United States. It’s so easy when you get the salary in check, go to your online banking and deposit it, without going to any branch. Also, it’s easy to send and receive the money from a different bank account, using Quick Pay, Apple pay, PayPal, and many other apps.

I also enjoy having different apps, like Money Pro, Mint, for example, to have your expenses, loans, and savings in one place.

How has the internet changed the way you shop?

If you are a very busy person and don’t have time to go shopping, there’re lots of other ways to do that nowadays. My parents and grandparents have never had such an opportunity to do that. The way they did shopping was going out somewhere to the mall and get something they needed. I can imagine, you went to the store got some food that you needed and forgot something, and remembered that at home! That would be awful to leave your house, drive to the store to buy it.

Right now if I need something really fast, I can go to an online marketplace and get that. I also have a chance to compare the prices, see the reviews, and communicate with the seller. Having Amazon, eBay, and other marketplaces it’s very simple, affordable, and easy to get something you’re looking for even for the next day.

When I speak with my grandmom, she’s in Belarus, and tell her that I just got the package that I ordered yesterday, she didn’t get it first, because they never had it before. The internet is the biggest help with shopping. I enjoy living in the Internet Era.

How has the Internet changed the way you eat?

When I was little, I don’t remember my mom, searching for the recipes on Google while cooking. She always used a huge book with tons of recipes. Also, my mom had a personal book where she wrote down the recipes she liked the most from the cooking book.

Nowadays, when I want to cook something, and I’m not really sure about the recipe, I can just simply open the Internet and search for it. Couple of days ago I was looking for a recipe of a baked salmon. I simply opened Google and searched for it. The search result gave me many different websites and various ways of how to cook the salmon: with lemon, soy sauce, tomatoes, potatoes, and so on. Even my grandmother search for recipes on the Internet nowadays. Social networks, like Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube are full of recipes, blogs, and shows about the food.

I love experimenting with food not only at home but in different restaurants as well. When I go to the restaurant, some of them don’t have the pictures of the food on the menu. That’s fine with me if they explain what kind of dish is it in the description. If they don’t, sometimes it’s hard to understand what goes inside of my dish. I always feel a bit awkward to be asking the waiter about all the dishes. In this case, I open Google maps or Yelp, search for the name of this restaurant, and just check the pictures of the food of other people that came here before. That works for sure! After I find something I like, I can just simply ask the waiter about the sauce they used or if we can change what was on the side.

I can surely tell that the Internet changed the way we eat to a much better way! 🙂

About Me

My name is Karyna. I’m a part-time student at Harper College. I’m on a path to get a web design and development degree. Also, I have a couple of part-time jobs, as an operations manager at a Home Improvement company and doing the listings for different marketplaces for a company that sells refurbished computers.

I didn’t have a lot of experience with WordPress, just signed up and tried changing themes and colors. The Home Improvement company, that I work for, has opened a year ago. When they just opened I was creating a website for them using Wix.com. I was choosing between WordPress and Wix, and WordPress looked too complicated for me at that time; when Wix had lots of user-friendly customizations.

As a operations manager, I’m also doing the advertisement, customer service, and photoshop services for them. I also had a bit of experience with HTML, while I was working as a quality assurance tester. Now I’m taking a class where we learn HTML and CSS. I have experience with Photoshop and Illustrator, not a professional, but use it pretty often to remove unwanted stuff, change / add fonts or colors.

About my hobbies, I love traveling, reading, and cooking. I would really like to share a part of my life in these blogs.
